When a gunman opened fire on a Las Vegas music festival on Sunday night, killing at least 59 people and injuring more than 500, he was able to inflicting extreme damage shooting from his hotel room.
The shooting took place during the Route 91 Harvest country music festival, which attracted roughly 22,000 people, and marks the largest mass shooting in U.S. history. An illustrated map of the scene shows how the gunman was able to cause so much harm in such a short amount of time.
Shortly after 10 p.m. local time, the gunman fired hundreds of rounds from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino into the crowd below while Jason Aldean performed his headlining set.
By 11 p.m., police had confirmed at least 20 casualties. By 11:25, they had a suspect on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay. Shortly before midnight, they tweeted that one suspect was down; approximately an hour later, they tweeted: "At this time we do not believe there are any more shooters."
Dozens of celebrities took to Twitter on Monday (Oct. 2) to express their condolences, including Harry Styles, Rihanna and Taylor Swift. President Trump called the shooting “an act of pure evil” in a national address, and commended the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department “for their courageous efforts, and for helping to save the lives of so many.”
