A gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel toward concertgoers attending the Route 91 Harvest country music festival on the Strip. The shooter was found dead in his hotel room from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The first shots were fired shortly after 10 p.m. local time.

The suspected gunman has been named as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada. The incident has been described as a “lone wolf” attack.

The authorities have yet to comment about a possible motive.

“We have no idea what his belief system was,” Sheriff Joe Lombardo of Clark County, Nevada said.

In a tweet posted just after 7 a.m. EST, President Donald Trump offered his “warmest condolences and sympathies” to those affected.
