Guy's Guide to Valentine's Day Gifts

Movies and TV make Valentine's Day look so simple for guys- get a card that "says it all", plunk down some cash for a new shiny something, cue soon-to-be rock-lite radio hit and the girl melts in our arms. But in reality, guys know things are a bit trickier than that. The key to a great Valentine's Day gift is to thread that emotional needle where the gift you choose expresses exactly how you feel about your relationship. So we've put together a little lesson on the do's and don'ts of Valentine's Day gift-giving.

Don’t: Heart-shaped box of chocolates. Sure, candy is a classic gift—and a good one for a woman you haven't been dating that long. But offering up the classic nut-and-soft-center assortment will only appear cute until your gal realizes that the last time she got a gift like this, she was in the fifth grade.
Do: Show her you're a sophisticated guy. Gourmet chocolates and baked goods can be a sweet Valentine's Day treat, provided you make the effort to find some unique, romantic and grown-up ones, like these Heart-Shaped Whoopie Pies.
Don’t: Lingerie. Sure, you want to let her know she's hot, but how well do you know this woman? If you’re going to be buying her a wispy little under thing, the answer better be "very." And while a hot pink bustier and thong set may seem like an inspired choice (hey—its'a gift for both of you!), an outfit of questionable taste can kill an enchanted evening fast—and god help you if you incorrectly guess her size.
Do: If you'd like to purchase sexy under things, it's better to ease into the process with something angled more toward her comfort. These super-comfy PJsshow you can think about her in bed without envisioning a scene from late night "B" movie on cable.
Don’t: Jewelry meant to look like the real (major) bling. Before you try to slip that fake gold necklace past her, consider the fact that women spend a heck of a lot more time thinking of, talking about, and looking at jewelry than men do. If you're trying to slip one by her, it's not going to work.
Do: Jewelry is often a great Valentine's Day option. Here are two tips. First, it's important to purchase jewelry appropriate for your relationship. Don't go overboard in a new relationship and don't go cheap if you've been together a while. And second, it's a bad idea to go into debt buying jewelry, unless you're putting the ring around her finger. Most times, a good way to go is to keep it elegant and tasteful. Here's an idea.
Don’t: Bath soaps. Sure, just about every woman loves to pamper herself in the shower. But along with being unoriginal, those soap/bubble bath/lotion combo baskets run the risk of reminding your girl what her little bro used to give mom for Christmas. You can do better.
Do: Pampering your better half is a great gift idea. And while usually, staying away from gift cards for Valentine's Day is a wise idea, a gift certificate for a spa treatment is a gift she'll love and appreciate.
Don’t: The Big Game. While you may see this as a way to turn her on to your interests, taking her to an event of your choosing is simply a bad idea. Just a reminder, Valentine's Day is a about her, not you.
Do: A gift of an experience you can both enjoy or even one you'll know she'd love to do by herself is a thoughtful and often unique gift. "Gifts of Experience"vary from city to city, but activities such as a chocolate making class, a vineyard picnic or even a Harley Davidson rental are gifts that show how well you know her and ho
