CORMEGA BACK WITH HIS NEW ALBUM 'BORN AND RAISED': Queens rapper also speaks about beef with Nas and being a father.

*Queens New York or “The Bridge,” which it is affectionately known as by locals, has a long history in the world of hip hop.

The city is home to iconic figures in the game such as Nas to Russell Simmons. Other notable acts include Capone & Noreaga, LL Cool J, and Mobb Deep just to name a few. One emcee that has been around just as long as some of the aforementioned but has yet to receive the commercial success as some of his peers is Cormega.

The rapper born Cory Mckay, would go on to become one of the most critically acclaimed writers from New York in spite of major setbacks along the way. After his prison release in 1995 Cormega was a featured artist on Nas’ “It Was Written” album on the track “Affirmative Action.” This would pave the way for him to be signed by Def Jam where he would go on to record the never released “The Testament.” Internal disputes and creative differences caused the rapper’s debut album to be indefinitely shelved.

Cormega then put out what would be considered one of the most slept on albums of 2001, “The Realness.” He followed that effort up with “The True Meaning” which went on to win Underground Album of The Year at the Source awards. Following the birth of his daughter in 2002, Cormega took a voluntary leave of absence to be a full time father.

EURweb caught up with the rapper and got a chance to talk about his new album, old beefs, and fatherhood. When asked what he has been up to during his hiatus, Cormega says:

“In 2002 my daughter was born and I wanted to be there for that whole year. That’s time you can’t get back. I chilled and fell back a bit. I won a couple awards while I wasn’t doing anything ironically ... then I just started focusing on the next project that I was going to do.”

Cormega was involved in a beef with childhood friend and fellow Queens native Nas. The verbal altercation inspired heated verses on both sides that thankfully never escalated into anything further. The rapper spoke about the current status of that beef and where it stands today:

“Its old news ... honestly I’m in my album mode. I’m into my album. He’s doing what he’s doing, and I’m doing what I’m doing. I let that go a long time ago and I’m sure he did too. We actually did a show together in 2006. The whole industry seen us together. Ever since then I’ve been doing me and he has been doing him.”

When asked about his feelings regarding the very public and very messy divorce between Nas and Kelis, the rapper had this to say:

“That’s none of my business. That is between him and her. They took a vow. Marriage, in my personal opinion, is sacred and I can’t speak on it; and I cant speak on his financial status. God Bless him and everything.”

One thing Cormega can and will speak on is “Born And Raised,” which is his newest project. It has all the makings of a classic including a monster collaboration with several titans of hip hop from the likes of KRS-1 (who’s son who is now deceased and was responsible for making it happen), DJ Premiere, DJ Red Alert, Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, and Parrish Smith from EPMD. Speaking on what the fans can expect when listening to the album he says:

“If you buy my album you can expect the unexpected. My album is not predictable. Don’t be like ‘I got this Cormega s&*t. I know it’s gonna be some shoot em’ up s&*t, some crack s&*t. It’s not that. Don’t get me wrong there is a couple of songs where I talk about the streets but that’s not it.”

A lot of people are saying that hip hop is dead and big business is killing the music. This is one album that despite the pressure to follow current trends doesn’t buckle under that weight and stays true from start to finish. “Born And Raised” is “The Realness” that not just hip hop fans, but people who appreciate quality music should all take the time to listen to.
