Troy Davis Update: Clemency Denied – Execution Set For Wednesday

*The LA Times is reporting that two defense lawyers say Georgia’s board of pardons has rejected a bid to halt the execution of Troy Anthony Davis.

Davis has attracted high-profile support for his claim that he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer.

The reaction to the GA board of pardons has been immediate. Such as this from Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network:

“National Action Network is stunned and outraged that a man could face execution when an overwhelming majority of the witnesses against him recanted.  This is one of the most egregious examples of injustice that I have seen in years and NAN will continue to stand with this family.”

Davis, 42, is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the state prison in Jackson. He was sentenced to death for the 1989 murder of off-duty Savannah Police Officer Mark Allen MacPhail.

Davis’ legal team finished presenting its case to the state Board of Pardons and Paroles yesterday in a last-ditch bid to win clemency.

“We believe we have established substantial doubt in this case,” Stephen Marsh, one of Davis’ lawyers, said after a three-hour hearing. The execution should not be allowed to go forward, he said.

But unfortunately it will, it appears.
