Marketing Ideas for DJs

DJs should use social media and events to market their skills.

DJs, or disc jockeys, work at a variety of events. Their main focus is either mixing and playing, or scratching music to create different live sounds. The work of a DJ is highly performance-oriented, and success depends on both awareness -- how many people know about the DJ -- and artistic talent. DJs who want to make a name for themselves should adopt key marketing strategies for their work.

  1. Advertise Your Roles

    • When an organization or individual hires a DJ, they often need several roles filled -- whether they realize it or not. DJing is just part of the job that a DJ may be expected to perform. Successful DJs can jump a step ahead and advertise a variety of additional services, including serving as master of ceremonies or coordinating entire events. Advertising these skills upfront will clue customers in on what services you can provide and make it easier for customers to make up their minds.

    Personal Visits

    • Often the best marketing move that a DJ can make is meeting potential clients in person. DJs should be prepared to walk their towns or cities. They should visit clubs, hotels and reception halls to meet with owners or other marketers to discuss DJ advertising and options. Sometimes DJs are able to work out combined events with other business. At other times, they may find a club that needs a spot filled or at least an owner who will keep their contact information for future needs.

    Online Marketing

    • Online marketing is vital for successful DJing. A DJ should have a Facebook page, at least, and preferably a Twitter account and MySpace profile as well. These social mediaapplications allow the DJ to quickly spread the word about availability and shows they are performing at. Not only do they target an audience that is often the most receptive to DJ services, communicating online is both a time and money saver.

    Combine Events and Marketing

    • When clients -- especially larger clients -- are considering a DJ, they often want to see the DJ in action, as well as in person. DJs should let potential clients know about upcoming gigs so customers can see how well they perform or get an idea of their style. This makes every open-attendance event a potential marketing project for the DJ, based on how many interested clients come to check out their performance.
