OWINGS MILLS, Md. The Baltimore Ravens signed veteran running back Ricky Williams to replace Willis McGahee, who they let go days before training camp.

Williams agreed to a two-year deal, the team announced Monday.

Williams, a former Heisman Trophy winner, played last season with the Miami Dolphins. If everything goes well with his physical today, he will work in tandem with Ray Rice.

A former Pro Bowler, Williams rushed for a career-high 1,853 yards to lead the league in 2002.

Around the league

NEW ENGLAND: Defensive end Shaun Ellis, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, signed with the Patriots after 11 seasons with the New York Jets. The Patriots also signed another former first-round draft pick, free-agent defensive end Andre Carter, who has played 10 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins.

Ellis, 34, a former South Carolina star, had become the longest-tenured player on the Jets.

"The fact that he chose them and all that, like I said before, there's no way I'm going to wish him well," Jets coach Rex Ryan said Sunday.

ARIZONA: Safety Adrian Wilson, a former N.C. State star, has a torn right biceps tendon and will try to rehabilitate the injury to avoid surgery that would sideline him for a longer period.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt would give no timetable for Wilson's return other than to say he expects the four-time Pro Bowler to play this season.

CLEVELAND: Coach Pat Shurmur revealed starting receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, a former Independence High star, has an injured bone in his left leg. Massaquoi, who showed up at camp with a cast on his leg, has not practiced. The Browns have not said how long they expect him to be out.

DENVER: The Broncos released their depth chart in advance of their preseason opener at Dallas and quarterback Tim Tebow is listed as Kyle Orton's backup. Tebow has been in more of a contest with Brady Quinn for the No. 2 job than with Orton for the starter's role.

DETROIT: Running back Mikel Leshoure tore his left Achilles tendon, ending his season before it began.

The rookie was injured after being hit high, quickly and clean, by defensive end Cliff Avril during an 11-on-11 drill.

GREEN BAY: Coach Mike McCarthy had some harsh words for his offense after a particularly sloppy practice Monday night. He was unhappy with mental errors, penalties and fumbles by running backs Ryan Grant and James Starks.

INDIANAPOLIS: Coach Jim Caldwell said linebacker Ernie Sims is expected to miss a couple of weeks after having an appendectomy Sunday night. Sims, a free-agent signee, had more than 100 tackles in each of his first three seasons with Detroit.

JACKSONVILLE: Coach Jack Del Rio ended training camp hazing this season, saying players need to have more respect for each other.

KANSAS CITY: Second-year tight end Tony Moeaki has been removed from the physically unable to perform list and participated in the Chiefs' morning walkthrough. The Chiefs have not said what was wrong with Moeaki, who caught 47 passes for 556 yards and three touchdowns last season.

LABOR UPDATE: NFL players have asked a federal judge in St. Paul, Minn., to refrain from ordering them to negotiate further with retirees upset about the way their request for better benefits was handled.

Attorney Barbara Berens filed the request for U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson, who has a hearing scheduled Wednesday in the case.

Hall of Fame defensive end Carl Eller has led the cause. His group filed a lawsuit last month against the NFL and the current players, accusing both sides of conspiring to keep benefit levels and pension payments low in the new collective-bargaining agreement.

MINNESOTA: Backup quarterback Rhett Bomar apologized to the team after he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving during the weekend. Bomar, 26, was booked about 5:15 a.m. Sunday for third-degree driving while intoxicated, Blue Earth County Jail spokeswoman Amber Carlson said.

PHILADELPHIA: Receiver DeSean Jackson ended his holdout and reported to camp. A two-time Pro Bowl pick, Jackson wants a new contract. He is set to earn $565,000 this season, the final of his four-year rookie deal.

SAN FRANCISCO: The 49ers agreed to terms on a one-year contract to bring back free-agent safety Dashon Goldson, who had 80 tackles, a sack and an interception in 2010.

STRINGER SETTLEMENT: A settlement has been reached in the final lawsuit stemming from the heat stroke death of Minnesota Vikings lineman Korey Stringer 10 years ago, his family announced.

Terms of the settlement between Stringer's widow, Kelci Stringer, and Chicago-based helmet and shoulder pads-maker Riddell Inc. were not disclosed. The family had reached separate settlements earlier with the NFL and other defendants.

TENNESSEE: Cornerback Cortland Finnegan is saying all the right things after he bolted training camp upset over contract talks, and he's busy apologizing to his bosses, teammates, fans and even the media for leaving camp Friday night.

Finnegan also said he will pay his fine willingly for missing a day of camp.
