Paula Deen Says Her Words Hurt and Disappointed People

*More than a year after Paula Deen’s emotional interview with the “Today” show’s Matt Lauer, the former Food Network star returned to  reflect on the scandal that resulted from using the “N-word.”

Speaking with Lauer, Deen mentioned how the controversy woke her up to power of words and their effect on people.

“Words are so powerful,” she replied when asked about the lessons she learned over the past year. “They can hurt. They can make people happy. Well, my words hurt people. They disappointed people, and frankly, I disappointed myself. And for that, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry for the hurt that I caused people because it went deep.”

Deen’s comments come after a tumultuous time that resulted in a huge blow to her career and business with the loss of her Food Network cooking show and a good bit of her multi-million dollar culinary empire in 2013. The misfortune stemmed from a court deposition Deen gave in which she admitted to using the “N-word” and other racial slurs some 30 years ago. The case was ultimately thrown out by a federal judge.

Looking back on her last “Today” show appearance, Deen, who was joined by her two sons, mentioned that she doesn’t recognize the woman who sat down with Lauer in 2013.

“I didn’t recognize that woman. That was a woman in trauma, I would say in shock, trying to understand what had happened,” Deen told Lauer. “I probably should not have been here. I probably should have been at home, maybe even under the care of a doctor.”

In addition to looking back on the “N-word” scandal, Deen revealed that she recently started a new subscription-based online channel. According to the celebrity chef, The Paula Deen Network will air her old Food Network cooking shows as well as 100 new shows she filmed over the past year.
