Reporters are barred from President Obama's meeting with Senate Democrats.
President Obama met Thursday afternoon with Senate Democrats, or so we're told.
The White House and Democratic lawmakers closed the meeting to reporters so that they could have a private conversation about the way forward in the new Republican-run Senate.
Mark Knoller of CBS News, a meticulous keeper of records, notes that Obama has over the years attended seven Senate or House issues conferences that were at least partly open to reporters.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama has had other meetings with lawmakers in private, and the senators did have some input into keeping this one closed.
The president also wanted "to spend some time talking about the State of the Union address, some aspects of which he may not discuss publicly yet," Earnest said
