Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly precipitated a spike in calls to the National Sexual Abuse Hotline. According to the Daily Beast, calls to the hotline jumped 27% on Thursday after the premiere of the docuseries, which contains allegations that Kelly engaged in sexual, physical and emotional abuse of several women including underage girls.
Ahead of the series’ debut on Thursday, RAINN — the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network — shared a link to their website and the NSAH’ hotline number, as you can see below. RAINN told the outlet that calls to the hotline regularly increase when sexual abuse is part of the news cycle. For example, Christine Blasey Ford testified against then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh caused a 147% increase in calls, while Donald Trump’s Access Hollywood tape saw a 33% jump in calls.
