Danai Gurira as Michonne in AMC’s “The Walking Dead”

*Fans of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” can circle Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013 on the calendar.

Season four kicks off on that date, with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his crew of survivors continuing to struggle against threats coming at them from the dead as well as the living. Living…mostly meaning the Governor (David Morrissey).

The Governor won’t be quite the same man we came to know during season 3, warns creator/executive producer Robert Kirkman. He’ll pop up in an episode when we least expect it, Kirkman says, refusing to elaborate. He’ll be “radically different,” Kirkman would only say.

Will the Governor’s new whatever affect the actions of Michonne (Danai Gurira) next season? The Governor had a hand in the death of her closest friend Andrea (Lauren Holden), and now that Michonne has been fully adopted into Andrea’s former crew, season four will see her hell bent on revenge.

“It’s something she’s very obsessed with. It’s a big part of her character this season,” says Kirkman. “She did lose Andrea and she lost her because of the Governor. She’s not willing to let that guy go or be out there.” Kirkman says that Michonne’s preoccupation with the Governor, “is something that may possibly be to her detriment.”

Below, Gurira spoke at a Paleyfest panel in March about the last several episodes of season 3, when viewers finally got a look at the humanity that sits underneath Michonne’s icy-cold exterior.

Season 4 also introduces the character Bob Stookey, a former army medic and town drunk played by “The Wire” standout Lawrence Gilliard Jr.

“Bob Stookey is very much the character that he was in the comic series. He also appears in the novel series and is a pretty big character there as well,” Kirkman says. “Maybe that means we’re adapting some of the stories he was involved in, maybe we’re doing some other things he was a part of or maybe we’re going a different way. Bob will be someone who is familiar to the comic and novel audience but we’re definitely not married to doing those stories and could do different things there.”

Gilliard Jr told Entertainment Weekly: “You can see there’s something deeper and darker that’s going on with this character, just from the first episode. We don’t really know what it is. We just know he’s got some issues that he’s dealing with.”
