J Paul of Three 6 Mafia stopped by the AKOO New York showroom, and we had the opportunity to catch up with him and get his opinion on the changes in rap, personal style, and being a King. AKOO:  You’ve been a player in the game for some time now and have remained consistent, but as most things do the game has changed. How do you feel about the current state of rap and the direction it is going in? DJ Paul: Some of the new rap I ain’t really a fan of it, but you know, I’m sure some of the old school rappers weren’t a fan of my rap.  So it’s like everything changes, I used to DJ too, I just started back dj’ing, and you read all the interviews and stuff, and all that about how cdj dj’s don’t like the dj’s who just use the track  or something like that

King Me: DJ Paul Interview

AKOO:  You’ve been a player in the game for some time now and have remained consistent, but as most things do the game has changed. How do you feel about the current state of rap and the direction it is going in?

DJ Paul: Some of the new rap I ain’t really a fan of it, but you know, I’m sure some of the old school rappers weren’t a fan of my rap.  So it’s like everything changes, I used to DJ too, I just started back dj’ing, and you read all the interviews and stuff, and all that about how cdj dj’s don’t like the dj’s who just use the track  or something like that, or laptop dj’s, and the midi controllers.  They can say that dj’s who use the midi controllers ain’t real dj’s and all that, but it’s the same way that turntable dj’s said about cdj dj’s. So you know history, it just changes, and it have to change. It would be a weird world if it didn’t.

AKOO: So in light of all the recent changes in rap, who would you say are some of your favorite artists emerging from the new generation of rappers?

DJ Paul:  New artists? I don’t listen to a lot of rappers to be honest, but who I do listen to, he new, but he sounds like the old style and that’s Waka Flocka. He got a kinda Three 6 Mafia kinda crunk, tear the club up, fuck you style. I guess that’s why I like him.

AKOO: We know you have the recent collab with Supreme, which has really had an impact on streetwear, but we want to know what influences your style?

DJ Paul: Man you know, I pretty much just keep it gangsta. I dress the same way I been dressing since I was young. I swag it out here and there, but for the most part I just be in jeans and a t-shirt.  I live on the West Coast mainly, so that’s pretty much what they do out there man. Just t-shirts, khakis, some fresh jeans, clean tim’s and a fitted hat. That’s all I need.

AKOO: Now we know you and Juicy J call yourselves the Kings of Memphis, and at AKOO we are all about being A King Of Oneself. So can you tell us what you think being a King is all about?

DJ Paul: Leadership, leadership and people that follow you and people that respect you.
