Kanye West to Perform at BET Awards
Plus, rapper performs for kids at his third annual 'Stay in School' concert

*BET has stepped up as the first network to book Kanye West since his Taylor Swift incident at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards sparked national outrage.

This morning BET announced that West will perform on the 2010 BET Awards scheduled for June 27.

The last time West appeared on TV was the day after the VMAs to rap his verse on Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” alongside Rihanna and apologize for Taylorgate on the premier episode of Jay Leno’s “The Jay Leno Show.”

Since then he’s mostly stayed in Hawaii working on his new album, tentatively titled “Good Ass Job.” Last week he released the first single “Power.”

In other Kanye news, the rapper spent his birthday yesterday performing a free concert for three Chicago Public Schools as part of the Kanye West Foundation’s third annual “Stay in School” event — a program targeted at improving students’ grades, behavior and attendance.

Fellow Chicago rappers Common and Lupe Fiasco joined West, performing their own hits, including Common’s “Universal Mind Control” and Fiasco’s “Superstar.”

West’s set included four songs — “Run This Town,” “Good Life,” “Touch the Sky,” and the newly-leaked single, “Power.”

The crowd of 1,600 students, all wearing white Kanye West Foundation t-shirts, sang West “Happy Birthday” to close the show.
