In an analysis of MLB walkup and warm up songs provided by the league, Billboard discovered the all-star rapper is this season’s most common artist among the walkup tracks. Drizzy appeared 17 separate times as a lead artist (not to mention a further 13 as a featured act), and players proved they’re up to date with the rapper’s catalog. The two most popular cuts, “6 God” and “Energy,” are both from Drake’s latest project, the surprise album If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, released in February.
Notably, the Toronto native’s worldwide popularity didn’t quite transfer to his home team. Shout out to Dalton Pompey of the Toronto Blue Jays, whose choice of “Know Yourself” gives the 6 God his sole spot on the Blue Jays’ roster.
Besides Drake, veteran rockers AC/DC nab 14 appearances to secure the league’s runner-up record, led by 1990’s “Thunderstruck.” Just below, 13 occurrences locks up third place for country star Jason Aldean, whose “Gonna Know We Were Here” and “Just Gettin’ Started” are his most common entries. Hip-hop acts round out the top tier, with Jay Z (11 occurrences) and Big Sean (10 occurrences) in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
With Drake and Big Sean boasting top five standing, it’s hardly surprising their recent collaboration, “Blessings,” is the league’s most popular track. The cut – from Sean’s Billboard 200-topping album Dark Sky Paradise, was chosen by eight different players. Classic rock again seizes the runner-up slot, this time via Led Zeppelin’s 1975 classic, “Kashmir.”
A three-way tie emerges for third place. 4 players each elect to walk up toPitbull’s “Como Yo Le Doy,” featuring Don Miguelo and “El Perdon,” the smash collaboration from Nicky Jam and Enrique Iglesias. The pair of Latin smash singles joins Flo Rida’s hit single “GDFR,” featuring Sage the Gemini to complete the triple play.
The rap-baseballl connection seen thus far stretches to the individual player level as well. Among the players with the highest batting averages (as of July 15), league leader Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers (.350) fittingly has “N***as in Paris,” which boasts two hip-hop heavyweights in Jay Z and Kanye West. Miami Marlins’ second baseman Dee Gordon, who ranks fifth (338) walks to Big Sean’s “Guap.”
In between the rap records, country music fuels Arizona Diamondbacks’ Paul Goldschmidt (.340), with Florida Georgia Line’s “It’z Just What We Do.” Just below, Washington Nationals Bryce Harper (.339) adds Darius Rucker’s popular cover of “Wagon Wheel” to the mix, one of four cuts selected by the right-fielder. In addition to “Wheel,” Harper has Moby’s “Flower,” Can’t Stop Won’t Stop’s “Up & Away” and Frank Sinatra’s “The Best Is Yet to Come” on reserve.
Finally, Texas Rangers’ first baseman Prince Fielder (.339) slides into fourth place. The huge hitter picks an tune with an appropriate punch… the nuclear warning siren.
