*Rapper Drake has successfully surpassed the likes of both and Kanye West as the artist with the most popular social media network this year. Wow, who knew?!
Media tracking company Networked Insights found that Drake earned a top spot on the list of rappers by garnering 46,212,641 online conversations, with Kanye “Yeezus” West and Lil “Weezy” Wayne coming in a distant second (25,418,362) and third (22,052,209) respectively.
His popularity seemed to spark even higher this year on the web after the star was photographed in the studio with Jay-Z earlier this year.
Drake’s social influence has spilled over into the academia with Tufts University referencing him and his “YOLO” (“You Only Live Once”) motto as a topic for its entrance applications. The phrase was compared to the “seize the day” phrase popularized by Latin poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus and the more modern saying “No day but today!”
“The ancient Romans started it when they coined the phrase ‘Carpe diem,’” reads the application. “The late composer and playwright Jonathan Larson proclaimed ‘No day but today!’ and most recently, Drake explained You Only Live Once (YOLO). Have you ever seized the day? Lived like there was no tomorrow? Or perhaps you plan to shout YOLO while jumping into something in the future. What does #YOLO mean to you?”
“YOLO” was made popular by Drake via his 2011 song “The Motto,” which sold more than three million in U.S. sales and rose to #20 on Billboard‘s Hot 100
