Cosby on Zimmerman Trial: Gives Haters Ammunition, but Raises Points

Cosby on Zimmerman Trial: Gives Haters Ammunition, but Raises Points

When asked about racial profiling, Cosby didn’t quite want to go there

All that to say that in the days following the George Zimmerman not guilty verdict, we’ve heard from a number of pundits and any number of high profile people like former president Jimmy Carter who thought the jury made the right decision based on the law they had to work with which dictated the jury instructions.

Now Cosby has stepped into the fray with an interesting, insightful and thought provoking comment about the case or to be specific, the “Stand Your Ground” law.

In an interview for Domenick Nati‘s DomNnate Radio Show, Bill Cosby was asked to give his thoughts on the Zimmerman verdict.

Before we get to the insightful and thought provoking comment, let’s just say that the other things he had to say regarding the trial won’t exactly endear him to the folks who are solidly against the not guilty verdict.

When asked about racial profiling, Cosby didn’t quite want to go there. His issue is how do you prove it.

“This racial stuff goes into a whole bunch of discussion which has stuff that you can’t prove,” Cosby said in an interview Tuesday. “You can’t prove somebody is a racist unless they really come out and do the act and is found to be that.”

Cosby finished his thoughts on the subject with: “Let’s not go into a racial discussion unless we really have something there.”

As far as the outcome of the trial, he pretty much feels the same way as a lot of folks: the prosecution botched it.

“The prosecution did not tell the story well, and they lost,” Cosby said.

Now, to us, when he transitions to talking about the Florida law and having a gun, he starts making some salient points that really matter.

“I know if you have a gun, it changes your whole feeling about what you can tell people, about how people better do what you say,” Cosby said. “Your mind can turn in such a way that you have a sense of control.”

It’s at the end of his comment when he makes the most sense and provokes thought:

“And we do know that the Florida state law says … you have a right to defend yourself. That means both people. So, you have a gun and you come up to me … I don’t have a gun, but then you show me your gun and I become frightened and according to the state of Florida, I have the right to defend myself. According to the state of Florida, the person with the gun has the right to defend him or herself. This is getting out of line.”

In other words, the law is straight crazy. It basically gives anyone a license to kill. Especially if one person has a gun and the other person doesn’t.
