Most mothers think they have given their child a name that they can be proud of. Some names have nostalgic or honorable meaning because they are taking on the name of a relative or parent. But, then you have names that, well…..
Anyway, no matter what a child’s name is it has no bearing whatsoever on who the child is…or their parents. Kate Hopkins is a British reality TV star that does not approve of her children interacting with or having a relationship of any kind with a child with what she calls a “low class” name like Tyler, Charmaine, Chantelle and Chardonnay. She believes that their names say something about their parents status and their intellect, yet her own children are named: Poppy, Maximillian, and India!
The audacity of someone who would name her children after a country a roman soldier and a drug to say that the parents of Charmaine and ‘nem are low class. One thing that is certain by her choice of names is that she’s pretentious and prosaic and there may not be a high level of education behind her either!
“They probably haven’t done their homework … there’s a whole set of things that go with children like that, and that’s why I don’t like those kind of children,” she explained. “I tend to think children who have intelligent names tend to have more intelligent parents and they make better play dates for my children.”
Who cares, lady?! But, according to the Huffington Post, the viral video of her remarks have “sparked” a conversation on names and the community’s perception. We are definitely in a venomous era of stereotypes that has created a new, but old, term…profiling. Maybe we should listen a bit closer to what she’s saying and only attach the value to her ignorance that will help us avoid and/or thwart the actions of people like her.
Check her out!
