*No matter how many other projects are undertaken by Bronx-born actor Andre Royo, his heart still bleeds for “The Wire” and the city where it was filmed.
At the Television Critics Association Press Tour Monday to promote his new Amazon Studio series “Hand of God,” Royo spoke to EURweb after the panel about his participation in a recent theater project he undertook with his “Wire” co-star and close friend Sonja Sohn.
The pair reunited with other cast members at the Lyric Opera House last month to perform pieces written by Baltimore residents based on the recent unrest over Freddie Gray.
“Art gives voice to the people, to people of all kinds,” Sohn told the Washington Post of the show, titled Wired Up. “In this case, we thought we could best serve Baltimore by creating a way to get their voices onstage.”
“The most effective storytelling comes from a deep, deep place,” Sohn added. “We told them to go back to an image. Don’t just tell the story you’ve been telling around the neighborhood. That’s how we got our material.”
In Wired Up, Sohn and director Leah C. Gardiner had the residents begin reading their own stories on stage before segueing to a “Wire” actor to complete the monologue.
Joining Sohn (Shakima Greggs) and Royo (“Bubbles”) for the event were co-stars Michael K. Williams (Omar Little), Larry Gilliard Jr., (D’Angelo Barksdale), Felicia Pearson (Snoop), Tristan Wilds (Michael Lee), Seth Gilliam (Raymond Carver), Chad L. Coleman (Dennis “Cutty” Wise), Jamie Hector (Marlo Stanfield), Gbenga Akinnagbe (Chris Partlow), Dierdre Lovejoy (Rhonda Pearlman), Anwan Glover (Slim Charles), Tray Chaney (Malik “Poot” Carr), and Maria Broom (Marla Daniels).
