A Tribe Called Quest’s comeback came at just the right time: Released the Friday after the election, the emotional and political “We Got It From Here … Thank You 4 Your Service” (Epic), the first album from the storied hip-hop group in nearly two decades, has topped the Billboard chart.
The release, which follows the death of one of the group’s rappers, Phife Dawg, in March, debuts at No. 1 with 112,000 in sales and 28 million streams for a total of 135,000 album-equivalent units, according to Nielsen Music. It’s A Tribe Called Quest’s second career No. 1, after “Beats, Rhymes and Life” in August 1996. The group’s previous album, “The Love Movement,” came out in 1998.
Also in this week’s top five: Pentatonix’s “A Pentatonix Christmas” (RCA) rises to No. 2 with 56,000 units; the “Trolls” soundtrack (RCA) holds at No. 3; and Rae Sremmurd’s “Sremmlife 2” (EarDrummers/Interscope) is at No. 4, largely on the strength of streams and downloads for its #MannequinChallenge-fueled hit“Black Beatles.” Drake’s “Views” (Young Money/Cash Money/Republic) is at No. 5.
Another big seller for the week — in CD form, no less — is not represented on the Billboard chart: Garth Brooks’s “The Ultimate Collection,” a 10-disc box set available exclusively at Target, sold 134,000 copies, according to BuzzAngle Music, a less prominent chart service. Because the collection was priced at $29.99, it did not meet the Billboard chart’s minimum price requirement, which states that each disc in a set must be valued at $3.49 or more.
