Editor-in-chief of Ebony magazine resigns

SHIA KAPOS TAKES NAMES

Mitzi Miller, editor-in-chief of Ebony magazine, has resignedless than a year after taking the helm.

“I'm looking forward to new opportunities,” she told me.

She's moving to Los Angeles to take a job in the television and film industry, though she wouldn't get more specific than that.

“I have a job offer that I can't talk about. It starts next month,” she said.

Last month, a book Miller had written called “The Vow” was aired as a Lifetime movie, "With This Ring."

“My goal is to continue telling dynamic stories in a new medium. I'm really looking forward to this new adventure,” she said. “I had an amazing experience at Johnson Publishing, and I'm going to carry all that information I learned into the future.”

Miller—a member of Crain's 40 Under 40 class of 2011

was formerly editor-in-chief of Jet magazine, Ebony's smaller sister publication. While there, she helped relaunch that magazine's website. Today, it's an online-only publication. Both titles operate under the Johnson Publishing umbrella.

“It's very humbling to have led an iconic brand, both Ebony and Jet. To be the only person other than Mr. Johnson to have done that is tremendous. I have nothing but positive things to say about the company,” she said referring to the late John Johnson, founder of both magazines and father of Linda Johnson Rice, who is now chairman of the company.

“We were delighted to have Ms. Miller as a part of our family over the last four years,” Johnson Publishing said in a statement. “We wish Mitzi well as she pursues a career in film. We are proud of the role that many of our alumnae play in the entertainment industry.”

The company said Miller has been on a personal leave for the last six weeks and a “strong editorial bench has stepped in.”
