Thousands of Kanye West fans descended on Manhattan's East Village early Monday after the "Life of Pablo" artist announced a surprise performance at a small New York City concert venue.

More than 4,000 people swarmed the streets around Webster Hall, which holds just 1,500, after West announced the so-called popup show on his Twitter account. They climbed on top of cars, dumpsters and scaffolding and hung out of windows hoping to get a better view.

Shortly after 1 a.m. EDT, an hour before the show was supposed to start, West tweeted that the performance was "sold out."

About 45 minutes later, Webster Hall tweeted that there would be no show and told would-be concert-goers to leave.

There is no late show at Webster Hall tonight. Please get home safely.

The New York Daily News reported that Kim Kardashian, West's wife, posted a Snapchat video purportedly showing West trying to convince New York City officials to give him permission to have a performance outside. The paper reported that West eventually retreated to his car, where he stood through the sunroof of his car to greet fans.

Eventually, West, Kardashian and their entourage departed and police began clearing the streets.

It was not clear whether tickets for the pop-up show were ever put on sale or whether Webster Hall knew that West planned to do the show before he announced it on Twitter.

West had been scheduled to headline the Governor's Ball festival on Randall's Island Sunday, but organizers canceled all the performances due to inclement weather.
