Streetwear Spotlight: Sweet Cheeba + GIVEAWAY!

Streetwear Spotlight: Sweet Cheeba + GIVEAWAY!

SoJones wants you to get some Sweet Cheeba and get your fashion high on. If you’re all about the t-shirts that make other people turn and raise their eyebrows, go for the dopest conversation-inducing Sweet Cheeba tees.  CHeeBA, the brains behind the brand sits down with us and shares what his clothing line is all about:

Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
Greetings, Im CHeeBA. Ma$termind of the Sweet Cheeba brand. When I was going to school for design, a few friends and myself tossed around the idea of doing some tees. After that fell through. I decided to keep it going on my own. Named it Sweet Cheeba. Kind of a play off of my last name Blount.

Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration
The theme for the summer collection. Hmmmm there isnt really a specific theme. I just try to make things that I think are dope. Some pieces are social commentary, some are kind of a modern vintage, some pop culture homage. To me the freshest urban wear period is late 80s, Early 90s. But my main inspiration is life. Especially city life.

Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)
The Sweet Cheeba brand has been written up in The Source, Antenna mag. Many of the artist I outfit are on the NY scene. Melo-X, Peter Hadar, Stalley, Spec Boogie, Fresh Daily to name a few. I also have placements on many of NYs tastemakers and scenesters. I’m currently working with a few stylist for that TV look. I have access to a lot of people but its also about a correct fit for the brand. I also did a commercial for the summer newness. Pretty excited about that.

What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year?
You really never know. I’m really not into looking at too many other designers. And fashion, the way you dress is a reflection of you as a person. Do you! But a drastic change has come recently with the emergence of artists like Kayne, Pharell. They’ve “suddenly” made it hip to wear more fitted clothing. When not too long ago many were opposed to it.

What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
I would like to see less cookie cutter style. Even if you have the same thing as someone else, it should rock differently. I would like to see more style. Just because you’re fresh doesn’t make you fly.

What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
My favorite item at the moment is an original LL Cool J ,My Radio concert Tee I caught a while ago.

TuPac or Biggie?
I’m from Brooklyn. So, I gotta go with Biggie but thats really the least of reasons. He changed the rap game. He was one of those artist, where you saw his personal progression and anguish. To me what really defines an artist. Plus he had lyrics for days and the stories he painted placed you right in the mix. The greatest in my book.
