Steve McQueen and John Ridley Beefin’? It Sure Looks Like it

86th Annual Academy Awards - Show

*OK, let’s not beat around the bush.

Is there a problem between John Ridley (pictured) who wrote the screenplay of “12 Years A Slave” and Steve McQueen, who directed it?

If not, it sure looked like it last night. First we noticed that when Ridley was making his way to the podium to accept his award for best adapted screenplay, he and McQueen did not acknowledge each other at all, although McQueen is seen giving him a rather tepid applause. In fact Ridley didn’t visibly get any serious love (hugs/handshakes) from any of cast members or the producers, either as far as we could tell. plus, we don’t know if it was emotion from winning or what, but Ridley had this strange kinda pissed off look on his face.

Next, while giving his acceptance speech, Ridley neglected to thank the director from the stage. McQueen returned the favor during his acceptance speech for best picture.

So what’s responsible for the suspected chill? Well, longtime Hollywood watcher Nikki Finke thinks she’s knows why. Here’s she tweeted:

“My sources attributing John Ridley-Steve McQueen cold shoulder at Oscars tonight to dispute over screenplay credit,”

Hmm, that kinda doesn’t hold water ’cause Ridley is universally known as the writer of the screenplay. And so far, neither Ridley nor McQueen have spoken publicly about any rift.

Watch the Vine below of Ridley getting up out of his seat and walking right past McQueen and McQueen’s lukewarm response.

Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Hmmmmm.
