10 Best Hip-Hop Hairstyles to Wear

Dreadlocks? Afro? Flat hi-top?  Spikes?  Or pimp-licious straight locks?  There are days (and decades) where how hip-hop artists wear their hair matters to the very core of their overall style.  In fact, it still matters now.  Check out SoJones.com’s 10 Best Hip-Hop Hairstyles, represented by 10 of the most influential, stylish hip-hop stars.  In random order, here we go!

1.  Vanilla Ice

His highlighted coif and stripe-patterned side trim once ruled teenage magazines, as his hit Ice Ice Baby ruled the top charts of hip hop in the early nineties.  Robert Van Winkle a.k.a. Vanilla Ice, helped pave the way for the glory of the thin-shaved sides while spreading the technique of a mild-patterned cut to hair stylists around the world.  You might think it’s lame today, but Madonna once fell for this guy, hairstyle and all.

2.  Snoop Dogg

Although he wants to be known by his new moniker Snoop Lion these days, he’ll always be Snoop Dogg when it comes to hairstyle.  This is a rapper who practically changes hairstyles so often, but yet manages to maintain his dreadlock signature.  Our personal favorite is the pigtails, obviously, but give Snoop anything… he can turn the most ridiculous hairdo into a style of his own.  The only bad hair day he had was when he put on a shower cap, and that STILL looked acceptable.  We seriously don’t know how he does it.

3.  Andre 3000

Andre 3000 has donned lots of hats lately, and might be trying to build a classic-handsome reputation, but we really think he should ditch the whole fedora thing and go experimental again with his hair.  It’s proven that he looked good with his middle-parted straight locks from his Hey Ya days, and also the classic Afro ‘do from his upcoming Hendrix biopic.

4.  Kanye West

It’s no surprise that Kanye West made it into this list, but out of all his experiments with his hair, we have to say we still can’t get over this one.  This is a hairstyle that makes Kanye stand out, and actually matches his out-of-the-box style approach.  Marvel at its details and try to copy this if you can.

5.  Will Smith

The Hollywood Royalty, Will Smith, wasn’t always the cool and conservative-looking bro.  He was once a very colorful teenager with over-sized parachute jackets, baggy pants, and a killer flat-top cut.  Back in his Fresh Prince From Bel Air days, Will Smith helped make the flat-top hairstyle a worldwide hit, adding to the fact that the cut was very significant in the old-school-90s hip-hop culture.  We do hope this makes a comeback!

6.  Sisqo

Sisqo’s all-silver ‘do featured in his 1999 album, Unleash The Dragon is proven to be one of the best hip-hop hairstyles to date.  Sisqo might not be Kanye West, but he knows his style!

7.  Nicki Minaj

Probably hard to pick just one of her many hairstyles, but ever since she stepped into the entertainment world, we have to say that the female rapper has wowed the world with her ever-changing styles.  Our personal favorite out of the many?  This hairdo she wore to the 2011 Grammy Awards, of course!

8.  Common

Sometimes being the best at something means having nothing at all, and when it’s applied to hairstyles, Common is what we mean.  We want to ask you this:  Have you EVER imagined Common with hair?  No?  That’s exactly it.  One of the best styles in hip hop is indeed… hairless!

9.  Wiz Khalifa

Rapper Wiz Khalifa might be going au naturel lately, but he once had this highlight that set him apart from other rappers.  We love it.  But we also love that he’s going demure considering his baby mama, Amber Rose, is all about boldness in style!

10.  Waka Flocka Flame

The new generation of dreadlocks is here and it’s led by Waka Flocka Flame.  If you’re thinking of getting dreadlocks, do it Waka-Flocka style, and combine it with your best trucker cap!
